Banking & Credit Cards
How to update your financial records at UK high-street banks and building societies.
Updating your bank account is a critical step in preventing identity fraud and ensuring your financial transactions remain seamless. Most UK financial institutions have a strict "Know Your Customer" (KYC) policy, meaning they require robust evidence before changing a name on an account.
STEP 1 Book an Appointment or Visit a Branch
While some digital-only banks (like Monzo or Starling) allow you to upload a photo of your Deed Poll via their app, most traditional banks like Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, and NatWest usually require an in-person visit. We recommend calling ahead to see if you need to book a specific "account maintenance" slot.
What Documents to Bring
To ensure your request is processed immediately, you should bring the following items to the branch:
- Your Original Deed Poll or a Certified Copy.
- Your current debit card and any credit cards.
- A form of photo ID (even if it is still in your old name).
- Your chequebook (if you still use one), as this will need to be replaced.
Important: Certified Copies
Many banks will insist on seeing the "Original" or a "Legalised Copy." If you are updating multiple banks or have sent your original to the Passport Office, you will need Certified Copies to avoid delays in your financial transition.
Mortgages and Loans
If you have an outstanding mortgage, the bank will need to update the Title Deeds with the HM Land Registry. This can sometimes involve a small administrative fee and may require your solicitor's involvement depending on the complexity of the loan agreement.
