FACT You Do Not Need a GRC to Change Your Name
A common misconception is that you need a **Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC)** to change your name. This is incorrect. You can change your name and title at any time using a Deed Poll. The GRC is only required to change the gender marker on your birth certificate.
Updating Your Passport
HM Passport Office (HMPO) allows you to change the gender marker on your passport (to 'M' or 'F') without a GRC. You simply need your Deed Poll and a letter from your doctor (GP or specialist) stating that your change of gender is "likely to be permanent."
Important: Titles
Titles such as Mx, Mr, Ms, Miss, and Mrs are not legally controlled in the UK. You can adopt any of these titles at any time. Our Deed Polls include your chosen title to ensure it is clearly recorded on your official documents.
NHS Records
When you update your name with the NHS, you can also request that your "gender marker" be updated on their systems. This may result in you being issued a new NHS number. This is a separate process from your Deed Poll but often happens at the same time.
