Changing the name on your British Passport is one of the most critical steps in your name-change journey. Unlike other documents, you cannot simply "update" a passport; you must apply for a completely new renewal to reflect your new legal identity.
STEP 1 Obtain Your Supporting Evidence
HMPO will not change your name based on a verbal request. You must provide your Enrolled or Unenrolled Deed Poll. If you are changing your name due to marriage or civil partnership, your original certificate is usually sufficient, unless you are creating a "double-barrelled" name not shown on the certificate.

Post-Dated Passports for Newlyweds
If you are getting married and want to travel on your honeymoon using your new name, you can apply for a Post-Dated Passport up to three months before the ceremony. Note that your old passport will be cancelled immediately, meaning you cannot travel abroad until after the wedding date.
Important: Certified Copies

Unexpired Visas
If your old passport contains a valid visa for countries like the USA (ESTA) or India, that visa may become invalid once the passport is cancelled. Always check with the relevant embassy before travelling with a new name.
